Purpose and Scope:
The HVAC Mechanic will independently install, maintain, modify, troubleshoot, repair, adjust, calibrate, validate, certify, test, operate and remove domestic and industrial year-round heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. Ensure proper temperature, humidity, and air quality in buildings by troubleshooting electrical/mechanical issues, replacing parts, cleaning components, managing refrigerants, and performing preventative maintenance. Locate and diagnose maintenance problems on equipment, conduct warranty services and perform emergency repairs.
Job Duties and Essential Responsibilities:
- Remove and replace compressors, condensing units, water pumps, fans and other system components.
- Maintain all internal electrical circuitry.
- Install pipe and duct systems through facilities.
- Order and maintain equipment.
- Connect vacuum and pressure gauges, electro/mechanical controls and other accessories.
- Read and make control adjustments using such typical testing equipment as freon leak tester, thermometer (wet and dry bulbs) sling and motorized psychrometer, monometer, velometer, hydrometer, humidistat, etc.
- Perform minor insulation with prefabricated mineral insulating material, bindings, plastic, cement, etc. as required.
- Test units and adjust all components to specifications.
- Replenish lubricants and refrigerants.
- May operate gas welding equipment to perform cutting, burning and soldering as necessary to accomplish work assignments.
- Ability to operate and service various rotating equipment.
- Monitor and record meter and gauge readings and operational data
- Inspect equipment on a regular basis.
- Maintain logs, charts, and records, as required.
- Clean and maintain equipment, and work areas.
- Maintains and uses specialized tools and equipment in compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
- Collaborate with Engineering personnel to enhance system performance.
- Work with verbal information, blueprints, wiring diagrams, schematics, technical publications, instruction bulletins and applicable National, State, and municipal specifications, codes and ordinances.
- Maintain certifications, licenses, permits, etc., required for performance of assigned tasks.
- Attend and participate in a variety of meetings and task force groups to integrate activities, communicate issues, obtain approvals, resolve problems, and maintain specific level of knowledge pertaining to new developments, requirements, and policies.
- Perform any work assigned to the employees in the classification.
- Perform work in other classifications when incidental but necessary to accomplish work assignment.
- Performs duties in compliance with Federal, State, local, NASA and Air Force laws and regulations and requirements and KSC/CCAFS energy management conservation regulations, collective bargaining agreements, security, safety, hurricane and other specialized programs or contractual requirements relating to the business of the section, working within the limits of established policy.
- Perform or assist with any departmental operations, under direction, to maintain workflow.
- Maintain security clearance, area permit(s), licenses, certifications, etc. required for performance of assigned tasks.
- Performs other related and/or associated duties as required.
Required Education/Certifications/Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent and
- A recognized apprenticeship training program plus 2 years of experience OR
- Military or Civilian vocational training plus 2 years of experience OR
- 5 years of direct work-related skills, knowledge, and experience.
Preferred Education/Certifications/Experience:
- Industrial HVAC experience desired.
- Universal EPA Certification for Refrigerant Handling preferred.
- Experience with MAXIMO desired.
Required Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, procedure manuals, schematics & blueprints.
- Demonstrated ability to read and understand electrical drawings and possess ability to work safely on both energized and de-energized equipment.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
- Working knowledge of computers and work-related computer programs associated with the position.
- Able to interact with customers and coworkers in a courteous, professional, and effective manner.
- Good communication and analytical skills.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail.
- Ability to exercise sound judgement and reason.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
Other Requirements:
- Must be a U.S. citizen and able to obtain and maintain required clearances/badges as required by program and position
- Must have the ability to communicate in English, both verbal and written in an effective manner.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must be able to pass applicable medical certification.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
This position requires the ability to lift, push, pull, and carry heavy objects exceeding 30 pounds; to walk, stand, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and bend or twist the body for extended periods; to work at heights; to frequently walk up and down stairs; and to climb ladders and scaffolding. The role involves frequent use of hands to handle and control tools, adjust equipment controls, and perform repetitive movements. The incumbent must be able to perform tasks requiring close visual acuity, depth perception, and the ability to adjust and focus, with corrective devices as needed. Job-related Personal Protective Equipment, including safety shoes, hearing and eye protection, hard hat, respirators, gloves, and fall protection, must be worn as required. The work environment may include exposure to extreme cold, heat, and humid conditions for extended periods, as well as high-noise areas, fumes, airborne particles, and electrical shock hazards. The position may also require a flexible work schedule and alternating workdays to meet mission and customer needs.

$37.58
