What You Will Do:

As a Software Tools Engineering Intern, you will support the development and enhancement of engineering tools used in the design, verification, and certification of avionics software systems. These tools improve the productivity, quality, and traceability of safety-critical software developed under aerospace standards such as DO-178C.

During this internship you will:

  • Assist in developing and maintaining software tools used by avionics engineering teams.
  • Support automation of software development and verification workflows.
  • Contribute to scripts and utilities used for data processing, reporting, and engineering analytics.
  • Help integrate engineering tools with systems such as requirements management, issue tracking, and configuration management.
  • Develop enhancements to internal pipelines that support software build, analysis, testing, and traceability.
  • Assist in generating reports and dashboards that provide insight into engineering metrics such as testing progress, requirement coverage, and development trends.
  • Work with experienced engineers to improve tooling used for safety-critical software development.
  • Participate in code reviews, technical discussions, and team planning sessions.

What You Will Learn

Through this internship you will gain hands-on experience in aerospace software development environments and modern engineering toolchains.

You will learn about:

  • Software development processes used in certified avionics systems
  • Aerospace development standards such as DO-178C
  • Development of engineering productivity tools and automation
  • Integration of tools with platforms such as Git, CI/CD pipelines, requirements management systems, and defect tracking systems
  • Best practices in software configuration management and traceability
  • Data analysis and reporting for engineering metrics
  • Working in a collaborative Agile engineering environment

You will also gain exposure to real-world avionics development programs and how engineering tools support safe and reliable aircraft systems.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience writing scripts or automation tools using Python.
  • Familiarity with Linux based development environments.
  • Understanding of software build systems or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Interest in aerospace, embedded systems, or safety-critical software development.
  • Familiarity with tools such as:
    • GitHub / GitLab
    • JIRA
    • Requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS)
  • Coursework or projects related to embedded systems, software testing, or software engineering processes.

The salary range for this role is 37,000 USD - 82,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.

Hired applicants may be eligible for benefits, including but not limited to, medical, dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, long-term disability, 401(k) match, flexible spending accounts, flexible work schedules, employee assistance program, Employee Scholar Program, parental leave, paid time off, and holidays. Specific benefits are dependent upon the specific business unit as well as whether or not the position is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement.

Hired applicants may be eligible for annual short-term and/or long-term incentive compensation programs depending on the level of the position and whether or not it is covered by a collective-bargaining agreement. Payments under these annual programs are not guaranteed and are dependent upon a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual performance, business unit performance, and/or the company’s performance.

This role is a U.S.-based role. If the successful candidate resides in a U.S. territory, the appropriate pay structure and benefits will apply.
