COMET provides overall management and implementation of ground system capabilities, flight hardware processing, and launch operations at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. These tasks support the International Space Station, Exploration Ground Systems, Space Launch System, Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle, and Launch Services Programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Plan, lead, organize, and control allocated resources for the Civil/Structural Analysis department, which is responsible for engineering design, development, analysis, and implementation of Ground Support Equipment (GSE) for flight hardware and other structures at Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
  • Establish personnel requirements, assignments, and priorities across a multifaceted team of engineers.
  • Evaluate results, employee performance, and organizational success while continuously improving upon past precedence.
  • Make personnel-related recommendations to senior management and Human Resources.
  • Offer expert technical feedback, as necessary, to employees, customers, and the COMET leadership team.
  • Prepare resource estimates and comply with customer budgetary limitations.
  • Manage internal department schedules and deliverables within strict project time constraints.
  • Present project status and technical recommendations to COMET leadership, Chief Engineers, and high-level program boards as required.
  • Continuously develop more proficient department policies and procedures in order to streamline quality workflow.
  • Implement efficient and effective quality, safety, and housekeeping standards.
  • Cultivate a motivating and productive work environment that encourages high employee performance.
  • Provide employee counseling and development opportunities while obeying all applicable EEO/AA programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor of Science (BS) in related management area; at least seven years of experience in progressively challenging technical or management positions.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills as evidenced by prior managerial, supervisory, and/or technical leadership experience.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, presentation, and customer interface skills.
  • Must be well organized, flexible, and capable of effectively prioritizing several multidisciplinary projects.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of applicable AISC, ASCE, ACI, and other relevant industry standards is required.
  • Thorough understanding of KSC/NASA standards is highly desired.
  • Expertise utilizing conventional structural analysis software packages, such as STAAD, SAP2000, and/or GT STRUDL is highly desired.
  • Additional analysis software familiarity, such as CSI SAFE and finite element analysis programs such as NX Nastran and/or MSC Nastran, is desired.
  • Capacity to understand and give technical feedback regarding complex hand calculations.
  • Working knowledge of KSC ground systems, such as the Mobile Launcher, Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), Pad Structures, Crawler Transporter, Arms & Umbilicals, etc., is highly desired.
  • Expert computer skills using Microsoft Office products.
  • Capability to manage resources effectively within schedule and budgetary constraints.
  • Ability to lead and provide direction to employees regarding established safety, quality, and performance protocols.
  • Proven ability of fostering a motivated, and productive staff with a passion for space flight.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, if necessary.
  • MUST HAVE A VALID US DRIVER LICENSE

Physical Requirements:

  • Will be required to climb stairs in order to access equipment for trouble shooting.
  • Will be required to wear hearing protection, eye protection, and other associated personal protective equipment.
  • Position may involve extended periods of sitting or standing.
  • Physical requirements are: sitting, walking, standing, extensive use of stairs, and access to remote structures.
  • Position is located on a hazardous testing facility; must be able to quickly evacuate buildings in the event of an emergency.

Work Environment:

  • Will be required to work inside and outside throughout the test complex.
  • Position may require daily travel to different areas on KSC property.
  • Hybrid (Part-Time Remote) options available.
  • Walking on uneven terrain including paved areas, gravel/rocks, and dirt/sand is required to access various locations on the center.
  • Climbing ladders and platforms may be necessary.
  • All work must be completed in a safe manner in accordance with NASA and company safety standards.

Equipment and Machines:

  • Computers and printers used for producing analyses, reports, and schedules.
  • Variety of equipment used in testing.

Attendance:

  • Full-time regular work hours between Monday-Friday.
  • Hybrid (Part-Time Remote) options available.
  • Position may require occasional overtime, including weekend work, depending on task.
  • Must be dependable and punctual.
  • Shift work may be required.

Other Essential Functions:

  • Must be able to accurately communicate ideas in writing and verbal correspondence.
  • Must be able to travel to support position requirements. This may include travel to and from the customer location, which may involve airline travel. In some cases, accommodations can be made for POV, if necessary.
  • Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
  • Must comply with all “drug free workplace” requirements as mandated by directives issued by the appropriate federal contracting officer and the company, which requires drug testing for use of illegal drugs by employees in sensitive positions.
  • Government security clearance may be required in the future.
  • Must maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters good relations with customers, clients, co-workers, and management.
